Food Shortages Are Here

I am doing this video today instead of Friday because it’s essential that people understand that food shortage is here, now. As in Today. I am going to share some links with you so you can go and verify for yourselves that this is happening. While looking at the Legacy Food Storage site they have a notice that orders are backed up at their warehouse by at least 35 to 50 days to get orders shipped out. Even Wise Foods, who was caught given their customer list to the government a year ago, has notices under products that they are low in stock. Augason Farms has a notice on their front page announcing that shipments will be about two months before they are shipped out. Thrive foods gives this same warning that they are backed up.

The Baltimore Sun had an article from a shopper which has some years under her belt of shopping saying she had never seen anything like this. Big box stores like Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s are feeling the pinch. Let’s start with Wal-Mart because most people do go to Wal-Mart more than the big box stores. Instant Potatoes are out of stock and has been the last three times I have looked at their online shopping site. Germ X sanitizer is out of its online store and its physical store as well. At least it was on Friday when Ani and I went in. Let’s take a peek at Sam’s. Rice is limited to what they have.

Baking With Sourdough Sara Pitzer

I got this book last week. It is the cutest little book on Sourdough and baking with it. I am looking forward to using and working my way through it. Razzle is doing great. He has produced enough starter to make biscuits. I can’t wait to do this. They are on page 18. I am going to do a straight biscuit nothing fancy. Just to get a fill for using sourdough starter. On page 9 is how to adapt regular bread recipes to use a sourdough starter. Awesome! Pressure Canning Confidence Builder Water

This project is so easy. The hardest part will be waiting to see the product of your labor. Michelle from All Sorts did this project two years ago and I wanted to share her results as well. She has been canning for years where I have two years coming in June.

Just fill your jars. Secure the lids. Don’t tighten them all the way. Just fingertip tight. I am going to go a half-hour because I just feel that is a safe time since we tend to have hep A outbreaks. And that’s the time we use on the Insta Pot for our drinking water. That will be another video.

This is where you can use the .5 gallon jars. And the only time you can use those jars for actual canning.

March Unboxing

This month’s items took too long to get here from when I was promised by Wal-Mart. Fed ex didn’t live up to the guarantee by Wal-Mart. So I am going to try Amazon Pantry next month. If that arrives when it’s guaranteed, (weather excluded) then I will be staying with Amazon Pantry.

Box Number 1: Toilet paper, two bottles of Molasses, Cheetos and yes, M&M’s Peanut Butter with a side of medical gloves.

Box Number 2: Two bags of all-purpose flour.

Antonia purchased a twin mattress from Wal-Mart’s site. She loved it. For about five minutes it was like having that four-year-old little girl with her first big girl bed. She jumped on the mattress. The squeals of delight.

Examining Canning Jars

This is a process that should be done every time you are getting ready to can anything. Take your jar and really look at it carefully. Look for anything like scratches you can see. If you have scratches you can see, there are scratches you can’t see. Any dents or signs of wear on the seal on the lid, through it out or use it to store leftovers. A small pint jar of leftover mashed potatoes will take up less space in your refrigerator.

Also, any signs of breaks on the rim of the jar I won’t use it for canning. I will use it for other things like holding Hersey’s Kisses. The ladies below Leisa and Heather are wonderful teachers. They are honest and absolutely thorough in their process.

Sourdough Starter: Day Four and Seven

Remember: I am doing this starter in an SHTF scenario.

Welcome to day four and six. Days two and up to seven you repeat the feeding process. The link below will give you directions. I used a copyrighted recipe in my King Author Flour Baking Companion cookbook. I put in a cup of water and about two cups of flour.

For mine, I am taking an approach that I am using what would be available in an SHTF situation. The chances are we would have access to all-purpose flour. It is basic there is nothing added to it like baking powder and baking soda for self-rising flour. Rye is going through the roof at a price. As for gluten-free, well in SHTF your body will adjust.

Sourdough Starter: Day Three

Remember: I am doing this starter in an SHTF scenario.

We are on day three and it’s feeding time again. Remember we have to get Razzle established. Day four we should start seeing more progress. It’s going to wonderful knowing that we can make bread the way our ancestors did without the yeast or baking powder/soda products.

Sourdough Starter: Day Two

Remember: I am doing this starter in an SHTF scenario.

Welcome to day two. I am going to name my starter Razzle from the late drummer of Hanoi Rocks. Below is a link to his cover of Blitzkrieg Bop. I choose to name my starter after him because he was a pretty cool dude.

Sourdough Starter: Day One

I finally jumped into the sourdough pool. I am taking the leap with a leap of faith and creating my sourdough starter. This was day one of building it. Day two which you will see tomorrow I named it.  For mine, I am taking an approach that I am using what would be available in an SHTF situation.
