A Russia-Ukraine War Could Send Ripples Across Africa and Asia

I have to wonder if those in government positions thought out what sanctions would mean. Ukraine has been the bread basket for years. The situation between Russia and Ukraine is going to affect beyond their borders.

This area if the world supplies the world the majority of wheat for flour. Rather it’s all-purpose, self-rising, and bread flour. Almost forgot cake flour. It all comes from the Ukrainian bread basket. Ok! For the most they supply the wheat.

The article talks about Russian intervention into Ukraine’s affairs. The famine that was caused. I am not saying this will be repeated. This time it’ll be world wide, not  just Ukraine. Food prices are going through the roof. They are only going up. As long as we are willing to buy as we bitch and moan about rising prices they will continue to go up. Once the cheapest loaf of bread goes to a dollar I am going to start making it.

Right now I’ll pay $.99. Once that loaf hits a buck. I am out. It’s not just the situation between Russia and Ukraine we need to worry about affecting the price of food, but global climate change.

80 Comforting Dinner Recipes from Grandma’s Recipe Box

https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/grandmas-best-suppers/

Grandma’s home cooking. There’s nothing like it right…. Every summer we used to my late mom’s family in Upstate New York. My mom’s family had a dairy farm in Henderson Harbor. I can’t remember the nsme of it but I do remember the white cheddar cheese curds. So creamy and delicious.

For two weeks out of the year we’d feast on some of the best cooking ever. Grandma’s just have a nack for cooking. And it doesn’t break the bank. No fancy food here. Just delicious food. The best part of the spaghetti sauce was knowing it came from their garden. Grandpa Truesdale grew a gardern up till his last year. The tomatoes were perfect. Nothing gmo or hybrid.

I hope y’all enjoy this article. Please share your memories of what your Grandmother cooked for you.

Easter Around the Corner

https://adventuresofmel.com/easter-dinner-menu-ideas/

April 17 is Easter. Hard to believe that but yeah! A month from Saint Patrick’s Day will be Easter. So let’s start preparing for it. Over the next few weeks, we will prep for it together.

Five weeks out: Do a survey? What does your family like? Who has the best rolls or green bean casserole? What room to eat? Let’s not forget a yard large enough to accommodate an Easter egg hunt and various games.

What equipment will you need to rent? Who has the most beautiful platter? Are you going to use fancy disposable dishes? Make it easier for yourself. Or make sure you have enough dish soap.

Volunteers. Oh yeah! As soon as someone asks “what can I do or bring, tell them…” Seriously! From that point you can start taking stock of what you have and need for a successful dinner, now will make the big day go smooth.

Watch “Weekly Grocer Walk Through: Walmart” on YouTube

The pasta was bare. Lot of sauce though. There was a new item. It’s a spicy mayo. The pop aisle was hit or miss. The aluminum problems are just starting. at least the fries section was better.

Bolivian Empanadas

https://alldonemonkey.com/2015/03/21/bolivian-cooking-empanadas/

Empandas are like little hand pies of meat and cheese goodness. They vary from country to country. The seasoning will be slightly different.

These couldn’t be easier to make. Pie dough and filling of some kind. Seal and fry. It doesn’t have to be a savory filling. It could be a sweet filling.

That reminds me, you can also do dessert fillings for tamales. Personally, I prefer the savory. So hope y’all will exolore these little handpies.

Kiss the hamburg stuff ftom a box bye. Seriously! After reading this recipe from Jo Cooks you will never buy the boxed stuff again. What’s half the stuff in these anyway?

The best news is you more than likely have everything needed to make this. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lasagna. Layer after layer of deliciousness. Who has time to make it on a Wednesday night.? You could take a day to make multiple batches of it. Until then enjoy this version.

12 Common Canning Mistakes

https://thefreerangelife.com/canning-mistakes/

We are finally going into spring. At least mentally because the weather isn’t cooperating in Southeast Michigan where I live. Sunday was beautiful today raining with a chance of snow.

Sarah Toney covers twelve common mistakes that canners can make. Mrs. Toney talks about a practice that the Amish had for generations. Waterbath canning low acid foods. The Amish would take hours to do this. I am sure now they use pressure canners by now. The ladies took turns watching the canner to make sure it stayed at the appropriate temperature.

Bubbles are fun in the backyard. Not in your jars. You’ve got to debubble. It helps to prevent siphoning.

Clean your rims…. Of your jars. 🤪 Anything that sticks to the rim of your jar could prevent sealing.

The number one thing to be careful of is botulism. I feel like there should a grim reaper music playing. Botulism is deadly. It’s nothing to play with. If in doubt, through it out.

Weekly menu 3/6 to 3/12

What’s on y’all’s menu for the week? Before setting a menu I took a look at our week. And went from there.

Sunday Antonia is working till 2:30 so shrimp and fries. Nice and easy.

Monday and Antonia has an early shift and her permit test on the same day. Breakfast for dinner will be excellent.

Tuesday we are cleaning out the fridge of leftovers. If there’s no leftovers then there’s plenty of fall back meals.

Wednesday is meatball subs. Last week Antonia got a meatball sub from Subway. It had been so long since she’d had one. The sheer joy on that litte face. That’s I have to make it at home.

Thursday is taco salad with shredded beef. I am hoping it will be like the Taco Bell Chalupa in a bowl. And I think I’ll do some chicken for Antonia.

Friday is going to be Bourbon BBQ by Manwich. I saw this and had to grab it. I will use chicken that I have cooked off and shredded.

Saturday will depend on Antonia’s hours.

Russian Dressing – Once Upon a Chef

https://www.onceuponachef.com/sauces/russian-dressing.html

This dressing is the bomb. Regardless of what you call it. Russian orThousand Island. It goes great over salads, burgers and fries. I do like the addition of sour cream.

I have triedto makethis dressing. I used an old fashion recipe that called for a hard boiled egg. WTF???🤦‍♀️ How does stuff like this get by? Anyway this recipe doesn’t call for hard boiled egg. Horseradish will add a nice bit to it. Ketchup for sweet and mayo. This recipe calls for Duke’s mayo. I don’t do name brands. Dill relish will add a tart flavor.

Rather you put this dressing on salad or a burger I have no doubt it’ll be good.

German Fried Potatoes (Bratkartoffeln) – Recipes From Europe

https://www.recipesfromeurope.com/german-fried-potatoes/

As I read this it broight back memories of eating this when I was growing up. We ate this side dish with roast, chops, pork steaks and breakfast.

These fried potatoes were my dad’s favorite potatoes next to mashed potatoes. Simply slice potatoes, onion and fry them up. Add salt and pepper. You can use little bit of oil. These potatoes are easy to cook.
