Depression Era Homemaking Skills

Kelly at Happy Montana has highlighted some of these skills. I can remember my late Grams rinsing out ziplock bags to reuse them. Except the ones that had raw meat in them. She never made more food than needed. I can remember my late mom telling me about dinners which each household would bring something to. They ate as a community. This eased the financial burden of a large dinner over a group rather than one person. I agree with this approach. Having dinners with a collective responsibility could be far better.

Here’s some Depression Era Homemaking Skills we have been using.

USE CLOTH: Have you seen the cost of paper towels lately? No. Seriously have you seen them because we haven’t bought them since 2018 when I started canning. They are simply too expensive. Plus using cloth towels and napkins is better for the environment.

SHARE OR FREEZE DINNERS: I love casseroles. It’s one or two dishes and you can have multiple dinners in your freezer or you can help friends. Of course, you could share the financial aspects of freezer meals and divide them up between friends or family.

MAKE YOUR OWN CLEANERS WHERE POSSIBLE: There’s no shortage of videos on YouTube and/or recipes on the internet for this. I keep a multi purpose cleaner on hand. Water and white vinegar. It doesn’t get everything. But it helps keep your kitchen clean. This way you can stretch your expensive cleaners out.

What do you do? What are some Depression Era skiils are you learning? I am currently working on learning to sew. This is going to be a life saver. Well actually a money saver. Once you have a pattern, all you have to do is buy fabric.

Our girl Mandy has a great noodle dish, again. Mandy shows how to make noodles from scratch. She also uses a Kitchen Aid pasta roller. Then she shows how to cut noodles with a knife. These noodles are so easy to make.

The sauce. Mandy uses everything she had on hand. She does have a video on how to make three of the sauces needed.

In honor of the Victory Day celebration, here is a list of Pancakes that would’ve been served during the Soviet Union’s first celebration. And every one since. There are uses for pancakes in the Russian Cuisine. This ppst features one that’s suited for breakfast.

INGREDIENTS: Farmers cheese. This cheese is similar to ricotta. So if you can’t get farmers cheese, just use ricotta.

TOPPINGS: Fruit based syrup is recommended. Kate uses blueberries but I am sure you could use in season.

Watch “Walmart Walk Through” on YouTube

Here is the recent grocer walk through. In a week period the cost of Dr. Pepper went up a dollar. Needless to say I left the case of of pop at Walmart. The eggs I usually get went down three dollars. That was a welcomed sight. Canned beans are down to $.89 after a year of being over a dollar. Milk area looked like savages went through it. Ground beef was $11.98. I will pass. There was a Tyson meal costed at $19.89. It was complete with a roast and veggies. This meal is a rip off. Seriously! You might be able to feed two at the most. Forget about steaks. Store brand pasta is under a dollar. Which is good.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas!

A week from today will be Mother’s Day. What to get her? What does she like? Is mom a crafty girl or is she a reader? What’s the budget? Do you have a menu plan? How about activities?

As a mom, here’s the things I always enjoyed on this day. Make me lunch. Or clean up after I cook. Take some chores off of my plate. Wipe the bathroom down and pick up clothes. We don’t expect you to do things the way we do. Actually, we don’t want our small children using chemical cleaners.

Budget! This is a harder conversation than which one gets fixed so there’s no more children. Have a set budget and don’t go a penny over. We understand the family budget may be tight. Don’t use credit cards. Use Pinterest instead for ideas. Take advantage of Walmart craft or reading section. Amazon has some items on sale for mom. But to be honest, we’d rather have quality time with our family.

Activities! Quality time brings me to activities. What us mom’s favorite movie? Plan a menu around it. If her favorite movie is say, Dr. Zhivago, than have the menu set to this time. Chances are you probably already have everything you need to make lunch or dinner. Schedule her a soak time. Make mom tea and let her have time in the tub to soak uninterrupted.

Queen For A Day! Here is something you could do for mom. Do things for mom on this day to make her feel like a Queen. Make sure she’s comfortable. Have her breakfast ready, along with with lunch and dinner. Plan this day starting this week. Even if dad isn’t much of a cook, help her do meal prep rather is a dump and go meal for a crockpot or casserole. Help her put it together with the recipe so dad can help operate the oven of load everything in the crockpot. This way even thoughshe did the main cooking and assembly she isn’t cooking on that day.

Those are some ideas you can do on a tight budget.

The Slow Death Of Vintage Skills?

Do you remember the level of housekeeping your grandmothers did? Granted I didn’t grew up around my late maternal grandmother, but I do remember the vacations we would take to visit her and her home was always tidy. There wasn’t laundry stacked everywhere. Dust didn’t have a prayer against Grams. She would rinse out ziploc bags when she could. Also, she never came to the breakfast table until she was put together.

In this post, Tiffany discusses how she is getting back to vintage homemaking skills and pass them to her children. These skills include scratch cooking, sewing, and gardening. These are the top skills I feel like all people should relearn. What about you?

In support for the Serbian people after the first mass shooting in Serbia’s history since gaining independence from the USSR.

Where is Serbia? Serbia is located in the Balkins. South of Hungary and northeast of Kosovo. They aren’t that far from the Adriatic Sea. So there are dishes with fish. However, most of their proteins are land based meats.

Please keep the citizens of Serbia in your prayers.

Watch “How To Make Jeans! Creating Custom Pants From Start To Finish – Tock Custom Sewing Tutorial” on YouTube

Tock Custom is sharing how to make a pair of jeans. No they don’t look or feel like mass produced pants. Tock uses a softer denim fabric than commerical companies use. On top of that is you can personalize them to your taste.

Perhaps putting faux jewels on the pockets or embroidery on the front of the jeans. To be honest, having a great pattern would be awesome. And cheaper than mass produced.

15 Mother’s Day Brunch Ideas!

Brunch for Mother’s Day is a great idea. It’s simple enough prep work could be done ahead of time. You could serve breakfast casserole that is her favorite. Or whatever your mom likes. Below are items I’d like to see on a brunch menu.

BREAD: This could be the blueberry biscuits pictured in this post. Or it could be French Toast or Bite Size Pancakes.

EGGS: My favorites are scrambled or omelet form. Throw in some bacon or sausage, veggies, and cheese. Awesome!

FRUIT: I love watermelon. However, if it’s not in season than something like berries or peaches.

DRINK: I enjoy having peach juice or some brands of apple juice. Frappuccinos are incredibly good. I recently tried the new Time Horton’s Nutella Frappuccino. It was pretty good.

What does (or do) your mom like for a brunch menu? The important thing is to thank your mom for what she does. Everyday. Not just one day a year. She doesn’t care about over priced garbage that will end up in a yard sale next year. Don’t forget to rope dad in to help.

Burger Sauce! 🍔

With grilling season around the corner, here’s a sauce that will sound a bit familiar.

It has mayo, relish, ketchup, vinegar, and salt/pepper. Yep! It’s similar to McDonald’s Special Sauce. The delicious sauce has been released. To be honest, I think what versions I have come across is better. Certainly cheaper.

How long could this sauce hang out in the fridge? Personally, I think keeping it in the back of your fridge about two weeks. If there’s any leftovers.
