Thursday Sales

I hope y’all are enjoying these Thursday Sales videos. They combine two things I enjoy doing. I love hunting for a good deal and when I can help someone else keep more of their money, that’s incredibly wonderful. These sales are for the Southeast Michigan corner where we live and they may not be available in your area. I will leave links so if you have a Kroger (or it’s sister stores) in your area you can check out what that sale is. Of course, I will bless you with the Aldi’s link. Meijers, again, I don’t know if they are everywhere across America or just in Michigan.

Aldi’s

Starting with my favorite store on earth, Aldi’s. Remember their Advent Calendar deals and variety. Now they have a similar setup with ham. Seriously four different hams to choose from. Ranging from $1.49 to $2.99 lb. This is excellent. Thanksgiving Alert: Turkey for $.87 lb. That’s not a bad price for this early into November. Baking supplies has a brown sugar bonus, $.89 a bag. Okay, that’s tempting. Except I have everything I need to make brown sugar so I will be skipping this sale. That price applies to Powdered Sugar as well.  Gala apples are $1.99 for a 3 lb bag.

Kroger

Kroger has a good deal on Boneless Chuck Roast on sale with a  and get one lesser value Free. The trick is to get them where they are within a penny to a nickel’s difference in price, that is when you save money. There was an employee at a Winn Dixie in Florida told my late mom and me this years ago. I have always remembered it.

Grapes are $.97 lb. That’s not bad since it’s two cents less than Aldi’s. Bell peppers are $.99 each, only orange, red, and yellow. Simply Truth apples Fuji and Honeycrisp apples are $2.99 for a 3 lb bag. They do have a good sale on pre-thanksgiving items with Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup, gravy, and Swanson Broth. Plus Jolly Green Giant Green Beans for the infamous green bean casserole at $.49 each with a store card of course.

Marie Callender’s pot pies and boxed dinners are $1.99 each. Not bad since you can either feed yourself or a family of two. She has the best commercially produced pot pies. The crust is flakey and delicious.

Kroger’s has a $70 Meal deal for Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving. You get one, protein (Ham, Turkey, or Smoked Turkey) and your choice of sides. I prefer to cook for myself. I am not saying the smoked turkey isn’t tempting, but $70 no. I can buy smoked turkey cold cuts.

Meijer’s

The next store is Meijer’s. Their sale is not that impressive compared to last week. Sorry! The best deal I could find is the apples. $.97 for a bulk bag of Honeycrisp. That’s it.

Wal-Mart

Butterball turkeys are $.98 lb. Not bad. Onions are $. 80 per pound. That’s good. If you want to drive over to Wal-Mart. Green Peppers are where they are going to score at $.80 each. Combine this deal and Kroger’s deal on peppers and you have a good deal. Their supplies for green bean casserole is cheaper than Kroger. Of course, that is for the Great Value brand. I get these things from Aldi’s and spend even less.

Kitchen Clean-Up

Alright, y’all I am finally free of the biggest financial burden I have had for the last three months. It was a car that needed major brake repairs and I didn’t have the funds to do it. So instead of letting it get ran into the ground, I opted to sell it. This worked out so much better. The couple who bought my car also bought my late uncle’s last car he had before getting sick with cancer. God does work miracles.

Back to the kitchen clean-up. I am going to take today after I get pumpkin-flavored coffee and go through everything (I have another trouble area that needs attention) what can be given away to those who need or want canned fruit can have the commercially canned fruit. And whatever else I know we won’t use it’s gone. I have some seasonings that have gone bad and need to be thrown out. No wonder why I have been putting this task off to last minute.

I will bring y’all back to see the results of the kitchen. I will also be getting some fall and Thanksgiving decorations from Dollar Tree just a block over from where we live. Y’all will get picks of everything. I will record the chicken being roasted. I haven’t forgotten that.

Make Holiday Cooking Easy

Here is how I am planning my holiday cooking. It’s stress-free. Take a day to cook your sides and the holiday (Thanksgiving) cook your protein (turkey) whatever it is..
Ina Garten’s rule of thumb: make something, buy something, and assemble something.

Cake Fail Analysis

After watching Noreen again, I realized that I let the cake go to the recommended time. I should have let it go to 15 min and start checking it every 2 1/2 to 5 min. Just till it meet the toothpick test.

Rolled Cake

This will be my first rolled cake ever. Growing up I would see these beautiful cakes rolled so perfectly. My late mom wouldn’t buy them nor would she make them because they were too hard to make. As you see they aren’t hard to make. If I can do this, so can you.

While we did use a boxed cake mix this video was about learning the technique of rolling a cake. The next time we will make a cake from scratch. It’s okay to use a boxed mix when learning a new technique. This way, if something goes wrong, no problem. You will do better next time.

It’s important to learn a technique which is what we focused on here in our video. However, Noreen is excellent at doing this and she is real. I have learned so much from her over the last year. I am sure y’all will like her as much as I do.

Alright, y’all, we have our cake rolled and it rolled beautifully. Or so I thought. When I unrolled it, things went everywhere. I will be filling it with peanut butter because chocolate and peanut butter were made for each other.  Don’t wait to try and make this. Get in the kitchen and go for it.

Kroger

Kroger sales are excellent. They have a Pork Butt for $.99 a pound. Can we say pulled pork? Maybe a Cuban style pork roast… Oh, the possibilities are endless. At $.99 lb you can go crazy. For meat, the Pork Butt is your best bet. Now for veggies $1.77 lb for Asparagus is as good as it’s going to get.

The good news if you entertain you will be set for a while.

Turkey Hill Ice Cream is $2.49. Hello! Yes, I will be getting at least vanilla. Anytime I can buy a $4 to $6 ice cream for under $5, I am on it. The final product is Fage yogurt is 10/$10. This yogurt is usually over a dollar each. Stock up!

Meijer’s

They have over 1,500 items which are 10/$10. That is a great choice. You have so many items you are bound to find something you need to stock up on. Halloween candy is still expensive, but you can get a better deal at Wal-Mart… Sorry, Meijer’s. They have Totino’s pizza for a dollar as well and the pizza rolls. Halloween Cookies are BOGO ½ off. They have a decent meat sale.

Canning Chicken

Last summer I went completely nuts with canning. I love it! I can get into a zone and just focus on what I am doing. Nothing outside of my kitchen matters. Of course, now we are in an apartment with a more open floor plan so I can watch for my pressure canner and I can blog or whatever else I need to do. I can be right there.

Halloween Safety Tips

I realized yesterday how close we are to Halloween and decided to post a safety tips video instead of the regular video.

We are so busy in our day-to-day lives. Work, family, and life in general. Here is a link to safety tips for Thursday night if you partake in Halloween. https://www.kidsmartz.org/ParentTips

For those who don’t partake in Trick-or-Treating, please pass these tips on to those who do. I know, Halloween is the Devil’s hell-iday. This ritual has been in our culture for so long that I don’t know how we could ever get it out. I am going to include a history of the day and where it really started. There are very few countries that celebrate this day. I sure there will come a day when we no longer partake in this day. https://www.history.com/topics/halloween/history-of-halloween
