Thursday Sales

Our first sales for 2020. 2019 went by in a blur and 2020 started with a bang. Of course, everyone has healthy items on sale as a way to tell us we gained too much weight over the holidays. Why don’t they just your fat here is the miracle items you need? Really!  Anyway, these sales are for the area of Southeast Michigan where we live. Remember to stock up on items you could barter with in a SHTIF situation. These should be items you and your family aren’t that crazy about eating.

Aldi’s

Tons of healthy items here as well. Now, Antonia has used Aldi’s vegan meat line products. She loved so much she never asked for it again. On top of that, they are $3.49 per item. Not a deal. They do have cucumbers on sale at $.49 each. Honeycrsip apples are $3.39 a bag. Not bad. But otherwise, average.

Kroger

California Navel Oranges or Grapefruit is $4.99 per bag. Not bad. Simple Truth apples are $3.49 per bag which isn’t bad if the regular apples are more. Otherwise, I am going for the regular apples. Let’s talk meat. Kroger has their buy one and get one free deal and you can get a pack of beef and pork just make sure they are within a penny’s difference. Simple Truth has a wide choice of vegan products to choose from. And they have coupons to add to your card. Their ten for ten deals you have to go into the store to see what they are. They’re not advertised on the flyer.

Meijer

They don’t have any 10/$10 sales advertised. They have sweet Navel Oranges $2.49 for a four-pound bag. Their best meat deal is on their chicken legs and thighs at $.99 a pound. This would be a good stock-up item if your family loves legs and thighs. They also have a buy one and get one free on the center cut pork chops. This is a good deal if you are pork eaters. Of course, Meijer has jumped on the vegan product bandwagon with its own brand of meatless items called Quron. These items are $2.99 for 7-oz to 12 oz pack. They do have nuggets at $10.99 for a large bag. Well, I guess it would be better than eating say fleas. This is my overall opinion on all vegan products and has nothing to do with Meijer products

Wal-Mart

And because we roll in alphabetical order, we now come to Wal-Mart. Sunday I posted an unboxing video of my first Wal-Mart home delivery box. I still don’t like that I can’t get Great Value flour sent to me like their sugar, it is what it is. I will ask about it the next time I go to Wal-Mart. They have a salmon twin pack for $9.94. Not bad. They, of course, sell vegan products and have for years.

Cheesy Ham Casserole

This is a typical casserole to use up Christmas or New Year’s Ham leftover.

2 cups of ham

2 cups of rice

1 can of cream of chicken (or whatever cream of soup you have)

1 cup of milk

Cheese – use what you have in 2 cups in the casserole and an additional amount on top of casserole.

Mix everything together and bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes covered and long enough to melt cheese on top.

Serve hot with bread of some kind.

Then stand back and watch your family devour it.

Once A Month Rice Prep

Okay, while I enjoy cooking, I don’t enjoy having to do the same job over and over. I watch so many of these ladies with five or more kids and they take one day and either prep stuff like ground beef for a month’s cooking (Amy Maryon) or they do all the cooking and assembling in one or three days (Jamerill Stewart). I figure if this works for them on such a large scale, then I can do this on a smaller scale. For two. Here we go:

Rice Prep

Depending on how much rice you need, and remember it will double once it’s cooked. Yeah, I forgot this simple fact. I enough rice for February.

Multiple whatever amount of rice you need by the amount of liquid needed to cook it. (Ratio is 2:1 2 cups of liquid to 1 cup of rice.)

Here is what I did:

4 cups of rice

8 cups of water

Place everything in your instant pot (or whatever electric pressure cooker you have). Use the rice feature and leave it on low pressure.

Once it’s done you can do a natural release or quick release depending on how soon you need cooked rice.

To Store it:

Measure it out as you need and place it in a container. Freeze till you need it.

You just shaved 15 to 20 minutes off of dinnertime.

First Wal-Mart Unboxing

Welcome back from the holiday break. The two weeks off was very much needed. I made the best of them and got as much quality time with my daughter as possible. Don’t forget if you decide to do this I make nothing. Not one penny. So, what was in my boxes?

Box 1, this was my Wal-Mart Brand Sugar 2 bags. Instant potatoes 3 boxes. We will be putting two back out of each order.

Box 2, this was my foundation from Rimmel just under $3. Antonia’s Yoga Mat which the cat won’t let her use in peace. Three boxes of Stove Top Stuffing, again because I can’t have their store brand delivered. Two bags of  Pilsbury flour 10 lb bags.

Overall I am satisfied with the timely delivery. However, Wal-Mart needs to work on getting their items on the home delivery list. Remember we are going to have a food shortage and we need to start getting ready now.

Jar It Up January

HAPPY NEW YEAR!🎊🎉

I just wanted to hop on and wish y’all a happy and safe New Year.. Don’t forget that Jar It Up January starts today for 2020. I am currently binge watching last year’s line up.

Once again Leisa Sutton from Sutton Daze at http://www.youtube.com starts out the season. She decided to do one canning project a week for the year.

Week 3 Bake Mas Wrap Up

Alright y’all, we are in week 3 the final week of Bake Mas.

Monday

Cranberry Oatmeal Cookies

I used the same recipe on a box of oatmeal as last week except I used cranberries instead of chocolate chips. And I prepped it to be frozen and baked later. This is the perfect solution for those of us who are so busy we barely have time to breathe. You can put this dough together and bake it off later.

First, prepare the dough as the directions say. Then freeze this dough you have to wrap it up in either parchment paper (or waxed) or plastic wrap. Then place it in a storage bag after you have written on the bag what it is and the date you placed in the freezer. It helps to write on the bag the temp and time to bake the cookies. This way you don’t have to go searching for the recipe.

Tuesday

Inheritance Fudge

I decided to rename this fudge Inheritance Fudge because it was inherited. And I do enjoy making it every year if only to watch my daughter go for the beater.

Inheritance Fudge

2 sticks of butter or 1 cup

⅔ cup of evaporated milk

4 cups of sugar

1 bag of chocolate morsels (or morsels of your choice)

7 oz. marshmallow fluff

1 tsp. Vanilla

Put butter, sugar, and milk in a heavy bottom pot. Heat till it hits a rolling boil.*  Stir for 5 minutes.

In a bowl place fluff and morsels.** After the mixture of butter, sugar, and milk have boiled for 5 minutes, add it to the bowl. Mix until there is no trace of fluff. Then add vanilla then stir a little more. Pour into pans. Let it cool overnight if possible.

*Rolling boil is a boil you can’t stir down.

**If you use peanut butter morsels add a cup of peanut butter.

Final Day and Final Video

Alright, y’all, it has been a long three weeks of various projects and I have disturbed one bag already. Next year I hope to have more people involved. Don’t forget January 1 starts Jar It Up January and it was awesome last year and this year has the potential to be even better. Enjoy the video! From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I will see you after New Year’s Day.

Thursday Sales

These sales are for the area of Southeast Michigan I live in.

Aldi’s

Their sales aren’t that impressive. Sorry! However, if you are doing a meat tray with crackers and cheese, they have your back. A great variety for a great price. Compared to other stores like Kroger, Aldi’s has it covered.

https://www.aldi.us/en/weekly-specials/our-weekly-ads/

GFS

Gordon Food Service is a local store where I live. They are like Sam’s without all the stuff you don’t really need like laptops. They focus on food, prep items like knives, and cleaning supplies. The most wonderful thing is you don’t need a membership to use maybe twice a year. Like Sam’s, Costco, and BJ’s, you have to buy in bulk. Have a large crew, they got your back.

They have a wonderful variety of cheeses. In every shape and form. They have Vegan items. If you have one close by they would worth a trip.

Kroger

The sales paper was a flop however the digital coupons were abundance and made up for it.

Scratch Kitchen Projects for 2020

These are projects and situations we will be looking at in 2020. They have a lot to do with our food system. Due to a poor harvest season for 2019 and 2020, we will be facing food shortages. There are channels at YouTube already showing areas in North Dakota which are having them. There are channels in the South you can find showing shortages. Deep South Homestead @ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn0P1Q-lAsIwnIM8wDPCg_g/featured

Also, you can come over and watch Homestead Tessie. She is a breath of fresh air.

Here are the projects we will be doing:

  1. Build a pantry on a budget. This is simple. You buy an extra box of instant potatoes. Keep one to use now and one to use later on down the road. If you do this each week you can have a pantry to sustain you and your family for years. Along with canning things like beans. And the meats you have in your freezer every three months or so.
  2. Look at sugar alternatives. Nothing GMO or chemical. Think honey. What did Abraham use? What would Mosses use? We are going old school here.
  3. Share recipes from the Great Depression. We will be looking at things people cooked during the Great Depression. Here is a link to Clara. This lady has passed now. She lived during the Great Depression and graced us with her wisdom before she passed. Her descendants have left her channel up. https://www.youtube.com/user/DepressionCooking
  4. Food Shortages. We are facing food shortages like we never thought possible here in America. They are coming fast. As I said above, there were crops that didn’t do good at all like Sugar Beets. These are GMO supply of sugar. I had no idea until I came across a video. I will be searching for independent sources for information. If you or anyone you know is in the Agribusiness please pass as much information as you can without jeopardizing their jobs.
